Breakthrough in Retinal Implants Expected to Restore Sight
Nov. 21, 2013
ECE associate professor Wolfgang Fink and Erich Schmid, professor emeritus at the University of Tübingen, Germany, have conducted a study on retinal implant design and electrical stimulation methods that could enable implants to produce clearer images.
The research, presented in San Diego at the 2013 IEEE International Conference on Neural Engineering, indicates the advances could help people who have lost their sight due to degenerative diseases such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa see more than light and vague shapes.
